    Excellent video. The background noise, however, made it harder for me to understand.. I have hearing loss. Are you aware of watering using feeding tubes? They are just a 4' PVC cheapest pipe about 2" diameter you can get with an angle cut on the bottom. If you try to drive them in the soil, they will stop up. It is better to put them in the hole as you are planting the tomato plant. You will need to help support the top of the tube until you install support for the tomato plant. The leaves do not get wet using this. I water 2 quarts of miracle gro for tomatoes weekly until they begin blooming. I then switch to miracle gro bloom buster. It has less nitrogen for the plant but better supports fruiting. Get a funnel. I water 32 plants in about 30 minutes a week. I have a wagon to carry the buckets of water. I wish you well.

    Hi Gary, Your passion for plants and explaining the science in a great practical, down to earth love for best success is awesome! You’re an excellent teacher! It’s so great tuning in to different plants and when they need fertilizer, when they need organic matter, what kind of soil ph and porosity they thrive in and how to nurture that and how much and when best to water! Beautiful! Thank you:) I’m a lifelong gardener and now I understand how to love my blueberries even better

    What’s the best way to “prune” a yew back to natural state after it has been squared off!

  • @simonallins6010
    @simonallins6010 Месяц назад

    My soil is definitely not optimal for growing blueberries. But they do great anyway. I made a compost with lots of pine needles. And I give them sweet or acid whey. Left over from when I make cheese, from my goats milk…

    • @GaryHeilig
      @GaryHeilig 29 дней назад

      I don't know if whey is acidic or not ,but the pine needles will have no real effect on pH although they do make a great mulch for the plants. Blueberries will perform better if organic matter is supplied. Thanks for watching.

    • @simonallins6010
      @simonallins6010 29 дней назад

      @@GaryHeilig yes, acid whey has ph around 4. Sweet whey 5,5… other plants love it to, but then diluted with water.

    How do you apply the additional sulphate after the bushes are planted?

    • @horticultureandhomes
      @horticultureandhomes Месяц назад

      You may drop the sulphur evenly over the surface of the root zone. A lawn fertilizer spreader works well if you have a lot of bushes. I drop my suphur and or fertilizer and then add a layer of organic mulch in the spring. Hope that helps.

    • @horticultureandhomes

      Idea for video- i would like to see different area of you garden throughout the year. Say every few months. It could be anyones garden that is willing to let you film. You lay out why you designed it the way you did, rotational cropping of small fruits. Fruit juice/cider production. I'd also be interested in your take on permaculture and JADAM organic culture. How would mushrooms do in an orchard row on natural mulch? Morels and winecaps.

    Guys, why do you still use imperial measurement system?

  • @delanaespinoza
    @delanaespinoza Месяц назад

    Testing the soil at my local university is $50 -$200. Other local offices are the same. Testing often isn’t financially smart, especially because it’s not an exact science. If I my blueberry leaves are turning yellow and or have iron chlorosis and I use ammonium sulfate according to the directions on the bag, shouldn’t I see results within a week or two? I set up my own study where I had control soil and I added aluminum sulfate to a test soil and it did not change at all. Is there something on the market that I can use with fairly quick results since my blueberries are going to die?

    • @GaryHeilig
      @GaryHeilig 29 дней назад

      There are a lot of variables that can influence the speed of pH change such as temperatures, soil moisture levels which affect the bacteria, soil texture, etc. The results that you get from a soil test are accurate in terms of pH, soil nutrient levels, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, etc. Using Ammonium sulfate is good for blueberries and it is an acidifying fertilizer` just like potassium sulfate (0-0-50), but the fertilizer alone won't change pH if you are way out of the preferred level. You water source can also work against you over time because the pH may be above 7.

  • @GardeningAndGod
    @GardeningAndGod Месяц назад

    Do you think the soil pH could be lowered slowly over the summer using fertilizers that are formulated for blueberries, azealas, rhododendrons?

    • @GaryHeilig
      @GaryHeilig 29 дней назад

      The thing that you have to watch out for with fertilizer products for acid loving plant will contain muriate of potash (potassium chloride) which blueberries do do like. Sulfate forms of fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) and potassium sulfate (0-0-50) are better. They are not particular about phosphorous sources. They don't need much anyway. Organic fertilizers cause no problems, but you will have to use more because they are less concentrated.

I also bought a couple of tubs of earthworms from a local bait shop and dumped them into the pile. I mix it 50/50 with the native top soil when planting our garden or fruit trees.
